The most difficult assignment a writer can face is that of writing a truly engaging children’s book. The prose must be simple, yet interesting. For a picture book, it needs to flow easily and softly off a parent’s tongue while, at the same time, being written at a level that offers a child the possibility that the child can read the book to themselves. Then, too, there is the story line. It never hurts to tell a story that’s never been told.
The images shown here accompany a story I wrote about of a herd of cows listening to the purr of a sleepy old man’s cat. The purr prompted a dance — as it turns out, a rain dance — with the illustrations depicting the dance, until rain pours down wonderfully.
The illustrations are mine. I’m taking my time with the prose because words matter. Oh, when I was creating the illustration, I forgot that cows don’t have horns.
RadioCat is the title.
